Let’s learn about:
TIDE POOLS

Have you ever played in a tidepool? Seen the bugs and critters flourish around their little pool of water? Crabs hiding in holes and dark spaces so you can’t see them?

If you have not seen this before, grab your parents and have them take you to a local State Park-Montana de Oro has a great place to explore tidepool creatures! Bring a camera and your curiosity because there is a lot to experience!

Did you know you should never take creatures from their tidepool? You can touch them, but if you put them in your bucket and bring them home they cannot survive! That’s like taking you into space without a space suit! Ouch!

Tidepools are home to many critters: sea stars, anenomes, crabs, plants and more! Each eat different foods and like different parts of the tidepool. Did you know sea stars can actually put their stomach OUTSIDE their body to eat their food!? Wow!

Please explore your local tidepools, but be careful in how you treat the animals that call it their home!

Create your own scope for underwater viewing!

Need:

Plastic wrap
Empty large can, such as a coffee can (the bigger, the better!)
Rubber band or duct tape
Can opener

Adult help

  1. Have an adult cut off both ends of the can, so you can see right through it.
  2. Cut a piece of plastic wrap larger than the can.
  3. Place over one end of the can and attach with a rubber band or duct tape.
Place on top of water and peer through open end of can. You should be able to clearly see under the water!
Before exploring tidepools, there are some rules you should follow:
1. Never take live animals or plants away from the tidepool-they will die.

2. Always be careful while climbing on the rocks around tidepools. They can be slippery and you could get easily hurt.

3. Have your parents look at the tides. You don’t want to be in a tidepool as the tide gets higher. You could get really wet or a wave could come upon you! Yikes!

4. Bring a camera to take photos of your favorite parts of the tidepool. Leave the critters there in their home!

5. Have a great time!
